Nike’s official shoe-cleaning guide recommends a soft brush for loose dirt, gentle cleaning and complete air-drying. It also gives separate advice for leather, suede and knit materials. Treat that as general guidance; your shoe’s own instructions take priority.

Match the care to the material

Canvas, mesh and everyday sneakers

Where the manufacturer permits it, use a soft brush or cloth with a suitably diluted, mild cleaning solution. Work gently and remove residue with a clean cloth. Avoid assuming that a white shoe needs bleach or that a running shoe is machine-washable.

Leather, suede and mixed materials

Leather finishes vary. Use products intended for the specific finish and avoid forceful scrubbing. Suede and nubuck need different tools and care; do not soak them or apply a general laundry treatment. For mixed-material or embellished shoes, ask for an assessment rather than treating every panel alike.

Give shoes time to dry

Air-dry cleaned shoes in a shaded, ventilated place at room temperature. Avoid direct heat, and check that the inside is dry before wearing or storing them. Drying time varies with the material, how wet the shoes are and the conditions around them.

For suitable canvas shoes, plain paper towels can help support the shape during drying. Adidas’s official sneaker-care guide describes air-drying and cautions against direct sunlight and heat. It also treats suede separately from canvas. Leave time for drying when planning care around school, work or an event.

Know when to stop and ask

If a pair has colour transfer, persistent odour, visible mould, peeling surfaces, loose soles or delicate decoration, tell the team before collection. Share the manufacturer’s instructions and any products or treatments already used. Clear photographs help explain your concern, although they cannot replace checking the actual shoe.

Do not assume that cleaning includes repairs, restoration or a particular stain-removal result. Ask what is suitable for your pair and what limitations apply before proceeding. A changed colour, worn finish or structural damage may remain after cleaning.
